The following is a general FAQ about Farm Studio International Artist Residencies.
Who is eligible to apply?

Artists creating in any media are welcome to apply: dance, theatre, music, sound, performance art, writing, painting, drawing, printmaking, textiles, culinary, photography, video/film, animation, architecture, sculpture (any material), ceramics, mixed-media / multi-media, interdisciplinary, installation, and other new/alternative media.

Researchers, curators, and art critics are also welcome to apply.

Open to emerging and established artists.

What countries do you accept applicants from?

Farm Studio hosts an international artist residency that accepts applicants from India and from all over the world.

When is the deadline for applications?

The deadline is set according to the schedule each year (please see website for current and future session details).

How far in advance do I need to apply?

Open Calls are posted on the website and are according to the residency session.

What is the length of one residency session?

The length of one residency session is approximately one month.

How many artists come to the residency each year?

Farm Studio residency can currently house 3 – 6 resident artists per month.

What is the selection process for the residency?

We will review submissions and make decisions based on the quality of the proposal, support materials submitted, and the artist’s willingness to interact positively with the community at large.

All artists will be informed by email shortly after this review or according to the date posted on the website.

Do you provide visas for international artists?

We do not provided visas. Artists must apply independently for a tourist visa to India. Most countries do require a visa to visit India but the requirements differ from country to country.

Does Farm Studio pay for travel costs or provide stipends?

As an independent residency, Farm Studio is currently unable to provide any funding or stipends for travel to the residency program.

Artists are encouraged to apply for funding from their own cultural agencies. Funding and sponsorship can be acknowledged in Farm Studio publicity including online and print materials, posters, catalogues, etc. as required.

Are there Residency fees?:

Farm Studio is an independent organization that relies on participant fees for the sustainability of our artist residency program. Without Indian or international funding, these contributions are essential for covering all program costs, including construction and building maintenance, full time staff salaries, resident artists’ meals, and operational expenses such as studio upkeep, material support, administrative costs, and program development. These fees are crucial for ensuring the continued success of our residency and valuable opportunities we provide to artists.

What does the Residency fee include?

Accommodation, meals and studio access is included in the eight hundred USD residency fee.

What does the residency fee Not include?
  • Local transportation (bus, rickshaw, taxi, car, etc.)

  • Sand/mud/clay for ceramic artists/potters (available to purchase nearby)
  • Kiln and firing assistant/facility (additional small rental charge)
  • Art gallery rental
  • Classes / workshops with local craftspeople (ie. potters, jewelers, dyers, blockprinters, weavers, tailors, metalsmiths, woodworkers, sculpters, painters, musicians, dancers, etc.)
  • Meals taken outside of the residency
  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes
  • Towel, personal toiletries
  • Toilet paper

Does Farm Studio Provide art supplies?

Due to the vast array of artistic disciplines we accommodate, each with its own unique requirements, we are unable to provide art supplies directly. Each artist must bring their own art supplies to ensure they have the tools and materials best suited to their specific craft.

I am a ceramic artist, does Farm Studio provide clay and access to a kiln?

Farm Studio does not supply art materials to any artists. However, several traditional pottery families reside in the nearby villages who have clay and offer access to their studios and kilns, for a fee. Costs vary – from free / donation-based to several hundred dollars, depending on the specific needs of the artist.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR SECURING MY SPOT?

Once accepted, artists receive an invitation by email, and a request to pay a non-refundable deposit.

How do I find out who is attending farm studio residency while I am there?

Once Farm Studio has received confirmation from all artists who have been selected, those artists’ profiles will be posted online.

Diverse artists working in a wide variety of artistic fields attend Farm Studio residencies at the same time. For example, during one session, resident artists might include a sculptor, painter, dancer and writer, etc. See Artists page for previous attendees.

Are there home cooked meals at Farm Studio residency?

Farm Studio staff / cooks prepare traditional Indian pure vegetarian meals – hearty breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Do you accept applications for collaborative projects?

Farm Studio residency accepts and encourages artists to apply for collaborative projects, but each person must fill out an application form. Residency fees are per person.

Will I need insurance?

Getting insurance is up to the artists’ discretion, but travel and health insurance is highly recommended. Some artists opt for insurance to cover any possible accident, loss or damage (including but not limited to health insurance and general liability insurance) during their stay.

Is smoking allowed in my studio/living space?

All studio buildings connected to the Farm Studio residency are smoke-free, but smoking in the outdoor and surrounding areas is permitted.

What cultural, recreational, or extracurricular activities are available?

Farm Studio offers many possibilities to step away from one’s artwork for a few hours or for a day. Located just 50 meters from the studio are walking trails that follow the desert and mountain. Andore Village is a 30 minute walk (approx. 2 km).

Farm Studio staff members can also suggest/organize half-day to full-day excursions to interesting cultural locations.

What is the internet set up at Farm Studio?

Farm Studio provides wireless internet access in and around the Farm Studio premises.

Where is Farm Studio located?

Farm Studio is located in rural Rajasthan (see website for map).

What is the weather like?

October weather is variable, just following the monsoon with little to no rain. Day time temperatures are 28-36 degrees celsius,  and night time 25 degrees celsus. November temperatures are cooler and dryer than October. During winter (Dec-Jan-Feb.) day time temperatures are between 15-30 degrees celsius and drop to between 5-15 degrees celsius in the night. During these months there is no rain at all, and there are no mosquitoes.

What are the accommodations?

Artists stay in individual huts or in individual rooms. Each room has a bed and bedding for all weather conditions.  Huts and rooms are equipped with a table, stool/chair and a light.

Shared (private) bathroom facilities.

What surrounds Farm Studio?

Farm Studio is an open environment. Sights and sounds of animals; particularly birds, dogs, cows, goats, etc. are present. As well as the local Marwari and Hindi neighbours or friends, people of many nationalities attend Farm Studio so many languages are spoken. Though extremely tranquil, life abounds! Artists can expect to meet neighbouring farmers, tractors, children, animals, insects, and other visitors during their time at Farm Studio.

Directly surrounding Farm Studio are fields and families farming. Some of the crops which are grown are: mango, papaya, wheat, groundnut, mustard, melons, pomegranate, castor, cotton and cumin. Many shepherds bring their buffalo, cows, goats, sheep and camels to graze in fields adjacent to Farm Studio.

Also accessible are walking trails into the desert and nearby mountains and hills.

Andore Village is 2km from Farm Studio and can be accessed by walking, bicycle, or rickshaw.
